Is a teaching and research academic at the Department of Geography, University of Malaya (UM). She does research in Marine Ecology and Geography, with a specialization in seagrass and related marine habitats.


Jillian enjoys working with citizen science groups, and is the scientific advisor for Kelab Alami and Reef Check Malaysia. She is a team member of Team Sea Habitats, based at the Physical Geography Laboratory at UM (


When she is not underwater, Jillian is the Artistic Director and Music Director of Rhythm in Bronze, an award-winning gamelan ensemble based in Kuala Lumpur. The Sea is her main source of musical inspiration.


Her expertise includes:

• Seagrass Ecology (seagrass-environment relationships, herbivory patterns)

Affendi Yang Amri

Dr. Jillian Ooi Lean Sim

Is the President of the Malaysian Society of Marine Sciences (MSMS) from 2018 to 2022. He works on Coral Reef Ecology in the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya (UM).


Affendi is the Malaysian coordinator for the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) for East Asia, is the scientific advisor for Reef Check Malaysia and works closely with Malaysian Marine Park management institutions.


He is a  team member of Team Sea Habitats, based at the Physical Geography Laboratory at UM ( 



His expertise includes:

• Coral Reef and Benthic Surveys 

• Hard Coral (Scleractinian) identification

• Coral Reef Ecology (Hard Coral Ecophysiology, Coral Bleaching, pollution and stress to corals)​

• Coral Reef Conservation Issues and Techniques

To spend 180 days 24/7 to record the habitat and marine life activities on an uninhabited tropical island in Malaysia.

A documentary aimed at eliciting a 180 degree change in people’s perspective of marine conservation and in their daily lives. 

To produce a comprehensive report for all the work done during the 180 days.

The 1st in Malaysia to study and promote sustainable conservation of all three Marine Habitats (Coral Reefs, Mangrove Forest and Seagrass Meadows) simultaneously for 180 days; 24/7
